Access for Teachers Brazil
An online teacher training program supporting public-school English teachers in Brazil funded by the U.S. Embassy in Brazil.
DESCRIPTION
World Learning developed two iterations of this program, which aimed to 1) support public-school English teachers in Brazil as they shift to more learner-centered, communicative teaching methods and 2) improve the English proficiency of the teachers themselves. The programs were customized to meet the needs of teachers with a high A1 and A2 proficiency level.
MY ROLE
I participated in this course throughout the entire lifecycle of the program in alignment with the ADDIE model:

Analysis: We identified the needs of the teachers, including their level of English proficiency, their school resource/technology level, their personal technology proficiency, how they planned to access the online course and participate in synchronous sessions (computer, phone, tablet).

Design & Development: During the design phase, I collaborated with the curriculum designers to create all supporting learning materials based on our needs assessment. Then, I developed the course in Canvas, including various tutorials on how to use Canvas.

Implementation: I enrolled all 400 participants and served as tech support throughout the 12-week course for those who needed extra assistance creating an account, logging in, or navigating the platform.

Evaluation: We create qualitative surveys where we ask teachers to reflect on and share thoughts on their experience in the course. This guides future iterations of the course. We also ask them to share any success stories or photos, which we use to promote future iterations.
Course/Classroom Materials
Each module was designed around one theme/topic and one activity using specific vocabulary. The teachers went through each activity as a student with the intention of these themes and activities being taught by the teacher to their students. This ensured that teachers 1) became familiar with the necessary English vocabulary; 2) understood what students would experience when doing these activities; and 3) had a model to follow when teaching these activities.
